Why I built it

After I faced a large emergency room bill, I was surprised and outraged by what our healthcare industry had become. How did we get here?

So much of the burden now falls on patients, who must sort through confusing bills while worrying about how to pay them. That is very different from how things were not long ago.

I built IsMyBillWrong to help level the playing field. This application is my contribution to giving all Americans the tools to understand their bills and take control of their medical spending.

What we are — and are not

IsMyBillWrong is a document-preparation and billing-advocacy service. We prepare self-help dispute materials in your own name and cite the public rules and statutes they rest on. We are not a law firm, we are not your attorney, and nothing here is legal advice. We do not guarantee any particular outcome; every bill and every dispute is different. For legal advice, consult a licensed attorney.

How to evaluate a finding

Start with the itemized bill, dates of service, and your insurer’s Explanation of Benefits. A flagged charge is a question to investigate, not proof that the charge is wrong. Coding edits, insurance coverage, and state rules have exceptions and may change. Ask the provider or insurer to explain the charge and keep a record of their response before deciding what to dispute.
