Montana directs a hospital, clinic, surgical center, or other health care provider, on a patient's or agent's request, to disclose its good-faith estimated charge for a health care service or course of treatment expected to exceed $500, either when the service is scheduled or within 10 business days of the request.

Uninsured and self-pay patients are entitled to a good-faith estimate of expected charges before scheduled care. If the final bill from a provider exceeds the good-faith estimate by at least $400, the patient may initiate the patient-provider dispute resolution (PPDR) process.
