Colorado hospital and provider patient-bill itemization
Colorado directs hospitals and providers, beginning July 1, 2024, to follow industry-standard billing practices on every patient bill. Each bill must state, at a minimum, the date of service, the patient's name, the provider's name, a description of the services provided, and the charge for each service.
Lo que puedes hacer: If a patient bill lacks a description and charge for each service, ask the hospital or provider to reissue a bill that meets the itemization requirements; billing-transparency complaints can go to the Colorado Division of Insurance.

Uninsured and self-pay patients are entitled to a good-faith estimate of expected charges before scheduled care. If the final bill from a provider exceeds the good-faith estimate by at least $400, the patient may initiate the patient-provider dispute resolution (PPDR) process.
Lo que puedes hacer: Compare the good-faith estimate to the final charges; where the bill exceeds the estimate by $400 or more, dispute the coding and charges and, if applicable, initiate the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process within 120 days of the bill.

Section 501(r) financial-assistance & charity-care policy
Tax-exempt nonprofit hospitals must maintain a written financial-assistance policy (FAP), limit amounts charged to FAP-eligible patients to no more than amounts generally billed (AGB) to insured patients, and refrain from extraordinary collection actions before making reasonable efforts to determine FAP eligibility.
Lo que puedes hacer: Apply for financial assistance under the hospital's FAP within the application period (at least 240 days from the first post-discharge billing statement) and require charges be limited to amounts generally billed.

Fair Debt Collection Practices Act — debt validation
When a debt is with a third-party collector, the consumer may dispute the debt and request validation. On a timely written dispute, the collector must cease collection until it mails verification of the debt.
